Are you willing to work alone and to keep silence? Membership of Ordo Astri involves practical Hermetic work on a daily basis; a magical diary Record is kept. Our approach to ritual magick and meditation is simple and precise. We have developed our own consistent and cohesive system of practical magick. Entry to the grades of the Order requires a sustained effort over a prolonged period of time; applicants must therefore have more than a superficial interest in the mysteries. They must be willing to practice and understand the powers of the sphinx: to know, to dare, to will and to keep silence.
Concerning differences between the New Age movement and the path of Hermetic Magick:
“Magic and mysticism are offered as panaceas to our ills, yet the reality is, that once we start down this path, the cracks in our personality and life aren't filled in, instead they are dug up and we are forced to rebuild from scratch. This causes many of them to throw up their hands, and give up their studies altogether.” - Dolores Ashcroft Nowicki
In an initiatory Order the task of the aspirant is to build and contribute to the symbol of that Order. This may be realised variously as a vault, a holy mountain or a pyramid. Aspirants build the temple from their body, their mind, their heart and their will so that it becomes a perfected and balanced representation of the universe they inhabit. Tiphereth is the crown and pinnacle of the First Order but it is from the Second Order that the temple receives light and so is fully realised as a living symbol. When the aspirant becomes an Initiate of the Second Order their task is to fasten themselves to the cross of their creative Will, to sacrifice their self to that Will so as to transmit the life-giving light back into the symbol they have helped to build and have made communion with. In this way modern magicians are partaking of the same act as our ancient Egyptian forbearers, whose physical temples were built magically as well as scientifically, so as to unite the microcosm with the macrocosm, “As above, so below”.
Let it be remembered that the Great Work in our tradition is not merely about obtaining personal insights, powers, or even spiritual enlightenment; it is a service that each and every one of us freely gives so as to assist cosmic and praeterhuman intelligences to bring about - in both the spiritual and the most material sense – the reign of Hormaku on earth.
Furthermore, anyone that is interested in Ordo Astri should understand that there are some profound differences between the Order’s interpretation of the magical and occult Law of Thelema and that of some other organisations, and indeed, what might generally be termed as mainstream Thelema:
We do not accept that Aleister Crowley – or anyone else, other than the ancient Egyptian high priest Ankh af-na Khonsu – was the “prophet” mentioned in Liber AL vel Legis, the Book of the Law. We are not interested in the populist personality cult of Aleister Crowley.
We do not seek to promote Thelema as a new world religion, or any kind of religion whatsoever. We do not accept that the ‘official’ commentaries on the Book of the Law are to be taken as authorative, or as the final word on the subject. The reception of the Book of the Law in Cairo, 1904 e.v. is not the only example of a magically received ‘transmission’!
Ordo Astri is not affiliated with Kenneth Grant’s Typhonian Order (formerly Typhonian O.T.O.). While we find Grant’s work fascinating and valuable, and are very much in agreement, for example, with his published Manifesto for his own Order, those who wish to work in the experimental tradition(s) he has established should contact the Typhonian Order and not Ordo Astri.
We do not perform ritual or ceremonies for the entertainment of the public. We do not emulate the ways of churches or religions. We do not officiate over ceremonies of Initiation with officers and members present, after the manner of the Freemasons. We do not advocate or encourage any system of belief whatsoever.
It should be clear from our literature that Ordo Astri is a Hermetic Order, and is an Occult School that provides training to aspirants in the Western Magical Tradition, and that utilises both ritual and meditation. Those that do not wish to do ritual, have little enthusiasm for MAGICK, or that feel they are more ‘mystically’ inclined, should seek elsewhere.
Applicants and aspirants to Ordo Astri are expected to maintain a high standard in their conduct and their work. We do not waste time with those that cannot follow out a discipline, or that are disrespectful and ill-mannered in their attitude.
There are no fees for membership. There are no fees for instruction, correspondence courses, Initiation or Initiatory grades or degrees.
